¿QUIÉN ES UN REFUGIADO?


Según la Convención de Ginebra de 1951, un refugiado es una persona que ha huido de su país “debido a fundados temores de ser perseguida por motivos de raza, religión, nacionalidad, pertenencia a determinado grupo social u opiniones políticas”. No puede o no quiere regresar porque su gobierno no puede o no quiere protegerla. Las Naciones Unidas colaboran con los gobiernos nacionales para encontrar países receptores para estas personas. Estados Unidos acepta a miles de refugiados cada año de todo el mundo. Los refugiados son huéspedes invitados de Estados Unidos. Son residentes legales y deberían poder disfrutar de todos los privilegios de su estatus.

¿QUIÉN ES UN SIV?


El programa de "Visas Especiales de Inmigrante" del Departamento de Estado de EE. UU. está diseñado para los valientes hombres (y algunas mujeres) que brindaron un apoyo crucial a las fuerzas militares estadounidenses durante los conflictos en Afganistán e Irak. Los inmigrantes que llegan bajo este programa se conocen como "VIS" y, al igual que los refugiados, deben someterse a un largo y exhaustivo proceso de investigación antes de ingresar a Estados Unidos. Debido a su compromiso con EE. UU. en las zonas de guerra de Afganistán e Irak, los vecinos de los VIS y sus familias no están seguros en su país de origen.
